Pilates vs Strength Training; Which is really better…?

“Change happens through movement, and movement heals.”  — Joseph Pilates

Ever notice that when you don’t move for a few days your body suddenly feels about 90 years old? Stiff, achy, tired… everything creaks when you stand up. That’s because our bodies are designed to move, not just sit, scroll, and occasionally walk to the fridge.

Science shows that lifting weights improves bone density, boosts metabolism, sharpens your mind, and keeps you moving confidently for life.

Strength training simply means lifting enough resistance to challenge your muscles and bones. This stimulates the bone-building cells (osteoblasts), helping keep bones strong.

Since bone density naturally starts to decline around age 30, strength training becomes even more important. And the good news? Lighter weights with higher reps work brilliantly too.

Now let’s talk about Pilates…

The beauty of Pilates is that it’s based on Contrology — which basically means learning to control your body instead of flinging it around hoping for the best. Pilates focuses on balance, coordination, and building strength from the inside out. You start to understand how your body actually works — how everything connects and supports each other.

Add breathwork into the mix and suddenly your nervous system goes:
“Ah… we’re safe here.” That’s when your body allows more range of motion, flexibility, and freedom of movement. Which is why you often leave a Pilates class feeling a bit like you’ve grown two inches taller and mysteriously improved your posture.

So instead of thinking Strength OR Pilates, think… Strength AND Pilates.

Pilates strengthens the small stabilising muscles around your joints, which support you when lifting weights. Strength training then builds muscle, bone density, and overall power. Together they help: reduce injury risk, improve balance, build a stronger, more resilient body Basically, they’re the fitness version of a great partnership.

And interestingly, newer research suggests the more variety in your workouts, the better. Challenging different muscles, movement patterns, and energy systems keeps your body adapting and improving. Translation: doing the exact same workout forever isn’t the magic solution. So next time you’re wondering whether to lift weights or book a Pilates class… Just do both.
